"The Experts" and Anatomical Terms

"What does 'anatomical' mean?"

"Anatomy is the study of the body and all its parts -- including those we talk about in the bathroom or when you need to tell mom something."

{giggle, chuckle, giggle}

 "The experts" tell parents to use correct anatomical terms as an additional layer of protection against abuse. I get it. We use correct anatomical terms. What I wish they'd added is:

  • Be prepared for any term you teach to be screamed out across a parking lot as you return your grocery cart.
  • Expect if you have two boys in a row, incessant jokes about anatomy.
  • Horrifying others will be hilarious to them; escalation will be perfected.
  • Ignoring the behavior you wish to extinguish will not work because a sibling will be there to laugh at the behavior you're trying to ignore.
  • You will never be able to buy peanut butter again.
  • Your shock-o-meter will be shattered; and once you use the correct terms, you will never not-hear them.
  • If you have two boys and then one girl, the girl might insult people with the names of her anatomical parts.

So, yes, experts, you've won. We're using the correct terms. You may bask in being right.
