Kitchen: Friday's Work

Friday, May 31, 2013

It looks like everything will be finished by Tuesday. This should be fine as Andre is showing no signs of interest in leaving his perfect environment. Here are some photos from today.

I LOVE the under cabinet lights. We are getting clear glass on those doors, though the grills aren't available for this style of cabinet.

Grout complete. I really like how the diagonal tile gives the appearance of more space.

Some of the baseboard is set. The walls are primed.

The switch for the disposal is finally next to the sink -- not under it! The kitchen is laid out much better than before.

Pantry cabinet installed.

Kitchen: Cabinets, Tile, Under Cab Lights Line

Thursday, May 30, 2013

Here is the day's work. I'm really grateful we chose maple after all. I was originally thinking that we needed white to open up the space of the room a bit more. But, I think these cabinets are still light enough to keep the room looking as big as possible. We need to follow up about the glass on the cabinet doors (It was supposed to be clear with grills.). What do you think of the frosted glass?

The 12" deep cabinets appear to fit pretty well into the space next to the window. Of course, it will look much better with the countertop on and all of the tools removed. I am impressed with everything they did today, though.

Left: grout, pantry cabinet, light fixtures, appliance and hardware install, countertop, and painting.

I had a dream last night that our microwave was being connected and I was ecstatic. I'm really going to appreciate that appliance after Andre arrives!!!

Isaac and I continue to discover parks and malls. Here is his morning message to Rich:

Kitchen: Day's Progress

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Rich was kind enough to let the contractors in this morning as I had an early morning OB appointment. (Andre has not dropped yet. His heartbeat and movements are normal. Dr. said to go for a walk to help Andre "drop.") The guys did a lot today. They removed the trim, prepared the plumbing and electrical lines, fixed the dimensions of the soffit, sanded the old caulk-spots around the old cabinets and countertop, brought all of the tools and cabinets into our unit, and laid about 2/3 of our tile diagonally. I'm already excited about this clean, well-laid floor. The light color should always be in style and relatively easy to clean!

There is only one room left in our condo where Isaac cannot get into trouble: his bedroom. You can imagine how attractive his bedroom seems to him when he has these other spaces to explore:

So, Isaac and I have to spend all day away. It's been a great way to get in quality time with him before Andre arrives. We've been talking about it a lot ... and what it means for him. He likes the idea in theory. He kisses my belly a lot and says "kiss Andre." Let's hope that continues...

Kitchen: Progress!

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

The previous floors were removed this morning leaving a relatively level surface and an additional inch to the room height. Tomorrow morning the new tile will be laid. I'm so grateful that this project is moving again!

Reading, Reading, Reading

Isaac constantly picks The Christmas Story book. He likes to make the sounds of the animals in the story. I'm totally responsible for the amazing donkey he does. Because I grew up on a farm.

This photo makes me smile. These two are special buds.

T - 8 Days

We have a new sitter, who is home for the summer. So we've been able to go on a couple of dates lately. Here we are in Old Town, where we met up with Holly and her dad last night.

I am now large enough for everyone to feel comfortable asking me the question, "When are you due?" LOTS of people have asked me that lately. I told a man at church that we had one week left today. He said, "It looks like it." (Maybe it would be good to be a little less comfortable with me.)

Kitchen Demolition

Night Before:
Rich took apart our rollaway dishwasher and hauled it away. Apparently no one wants a rollaway dishwasher in working order (not even Salvation Army). So, we just had to call it a life well lived.

I spent several hours boxing up our cabinet belongings and putting them in our bedroom. Rich removed the door hardware, which was replaced right before we bought this unit. The crew will reinstall in on the new cabinets.

Day 1:
We begin eating out. Isaac likes cheeseburgers and Krispy Kreme. (We quickly moved on to Subway. No one wants to gain 10 pounds in 2 weeks, lol!)

I talked Rich into getting Krispy Kreme and coffee because I thought it would be nice to treat the construction guys on their first day here -- and promote a spirit of good will throughout the project. They didn't want any. But Isaac LOVED them. He called them "bacon," which I think he was confusing with "bagels," which look similar to glazed donuts. Did you follow that? Yes, I am becoming an expert at thinking like a toddler.

The construction team arrive at 8:30 on the nose (except for the project manager). The entire kitchen was disassembled and removed within 90 minutes. Isaac enjoyed watching the demolition. He kept saying "so strong," which is what I tell him he will be if he eats his veggies. Normally, he says, "Dada so strong," but it applied to these guys as well. They were motivated, professional, and liked Isaac, who was constantly peering in on the process. I'm so glad we aren't doing this ourselves!

Days 2-6:
Waiting for the holiday weekend to end. The floor gets removed on Tuesday.

If all goes well, the project will be done by the end of the day next Monday (my due date) because we are awesome like that. Rich reminded me that it would be nice for me to be in the hospital and miss the mess and the unpacking. How brilliant! I hadn't thought of that. :)

Finally Back into a Rhythm!

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Last weekend began the first week of no traveling for Rich in weeks. Isaac says "take Dada airport" every time we get in the car. I am so glad that we don't have to do that for a while now!

Here is a hodge podge from the last week. Baseball season is in full-swing. Rich went to the game on Saturday. So, of course, he had to put Isaac in his Tiger's hat. I think Isaac's really beginning to look like a little man. His comprehension is soaring this year.

He adds new words and phrases to his vocabulary daily. He even has a few full sentences like "Isaac needs a snack."

On Sunday, we spent the morning with the cousins. We went to a new playground. A happy discovery: They all liked the teeter totter and played together here for a surprising amount of time.

Isaac also picks up repetition quickly. I think he just has a good memory like his dad. He often remembers his age and picks up other sequences with relative ease (Oh to have a good memory! I sure hope he appreciates it.).

We still are working on the patience and sharing.

New Kitchen!

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Everyone has asked, so here we go! Take a look at our new kitchen plans:

We (I) vacillated about whether to transform our current set-up (straight line kitchen, 7x10) into an L-shaped kitchen with more cabinet space.

Notice some of the wasted space around the stove. The new plan will add a built-in 18" dishwasher and several inches more of counter space. Additionally, the cabinet above the stove will be an above-microwave cabinet. The microwave will provide a light and a circulating fan. The glass doors on the wall cabinets flanking the sink should help give the appearance of more space/depth. And under-cabinet lights will prevent the shadows caused by the wall cabinets and myself when I'm working around the sink.
The cabinets themselves are quite old (not sure how old) with exposed hinges, no drawer tracks to speak of, and layers of grime from years of tenants. I've promised myself to buy a splatter screen for sautéing before the new kitchen is finished to help prevent some of these otherwise-inevitable messes. I shamefully have contributed to the mess around the stove.

Closing this gap will make me really happy!

(Dad, close your eyes.) Yes, that is curled sheet vinyl placed over curled-up sheet vinyl placed over vinyl tiles; trim with large gaps; and shoddy electrical plate placement. You will be happy to know that everyone working on the new kitchen is licensed and insured.

Tacky paper.

We drew up a pretty satisfying L-shaped kitchen plan (the one I emailed the grandparents), which included a full-sized, built-in dishwasher. At the end of the day, however, all suppliers appeared unable to make that design fit within the parameters of our budget. There was additional electrical work required (and soffit work), which added a lot to the cost. The good news is that we were able to work out some "stylistic" upgrades to this plan, which would not have been possible in a more "functional" plan. For example, granite tops, glass-front doors, and diagonal tile fit within the budget of a straight-line kitchen (in part due to sales, which didn't apply to the other plan).

The base cabinets here are 12" deep due to a window on the adjacent left wall, which is 10" from the corner. So, neither standard-depth cabinets nor wall cabinets work here without causing window blockage or head bumps. The circuit breaker is to the left of the door way. We *may* put a picture or a pot rack in the open space here. Right now the rollaway dishwasher sits where those base cabinets are and blocks the light.

I will not miss the rollaway dishwasher, though it was nice to have one as opposed to no dishwasher at all. It also has provided a nice top for our coffee maker, toaster, and paper towels. We are giving away the Keurig because it simply doesn't fit. The simple coffee maker is meeting our needs just fine.

Isaac was enjoying this photo shoot as you can tell. The improvements really will make this space substantially nicer. The previous owner did her fair share of upgrades including new vinyl windows and blinds, a remodeled bathroom, and refinished wood floors in the living space. The kitchen is the only space that needs work.

The narrow cabinets along the right wall will open up the light path from the window and providing more storage space. The 12" depth will still be perfect for the coffee maker, toaster, and paper towels. We could also use it as a buffet station when we have guests. I'm excited about being able to maximize the space we have.

The contractor that we chose offered a sales package which included *almost* everything we needed (licensed plumbers, electricians, and carpenters). There were fewer choices, but the inclusions were nice: granite tops, ceramic tile, all-wood cabinets, painting of the entire room, connecting all of our appliances, a new sink & faucet, demolition and installation of everything. It did not include new appliances. We tried to talk them into giving us a credit for a built-in 18" dishwasher and a microwave. They couldn't work that out, but they did throw in a pantry cabinet, glass fronted-cabinets, diagonal tile, and connection of a new ceiling light at no extra charge. We added under cabinet lighting and a microwave outlet. We are keeping the refrigerator and stove because they work well, and are replacing the rollaway dishwasher with a built-in one, and providing a microwave. (It will be SO NICE to actually HAVE a microwave again!)

The current pantry cabinet is helpful for storage, though it is very long/deep. Moving the doors to the "side" will help us to see what we're reaching for and prevent us from having to reach really far for items in the back.

If there's one thing I've learned so far, it's not to underestimate the value a general contractor provides. We were surprised by how many details people (at IKEA and Home Depot) didn't remember, how many times we had to request an appointment just to have it change, and how poor some of the service was in general (among other independent, small contractors as well). The idea of "cutting out the middle man" is fine in theory. But, as we experienced, the price of having a project manager wasn't that much greater than managing the project ourselves, which was a HUGE pain. I could go on an on about the problems with many contractors (including one who hung up on me and made me cry) and suppliers (taking 20 minutes to find an appointment I had a confirmation number for), but I don't want to make your heads spin. And we are very pleased with the results we are getting now (thank you, Better Business Bureau and Angie's List!).

So, we are using Virginia Marble & Granite (yes, they do general contracting) and our demolition begins next Wednesday. The project should be finished in 1-2 weeks. Our cabinets are TSG Shakertown Maple with Peacock Green tops (don't let the name fool you -- it really looks black) and sand-colored tile. More pictures coming soon!

Man Trip

[Photos courtesy of Grandpa & Grandma A]

Isaac and Dada took a trip last weekend to visit Grandpa and Grandma. Isaac was super-excited about it and has been talking about it since he returned: "Gra Pah, Gra Mah, Airpwane, Isaac, Dada, New Playground!" He returned so full of fun experiences that he slept until 11:00am on Monday. Here are a few photos and videos:
