The Engineer

Monday, February 28, 2022

"Hey, Mom! 3+6+9+12+15+18+21+24+27=135."

"No. I don't think that's right."

"What! I just took a long time adding that in my head!"

Later that day:

He's losing his afternoon helper this week because he's doing so well. We are thrilled by his progress over the last two years! He's had ABA technicians break down social skills in real time so that his social skills can keep up with his academic skills. (His standardized test scores just came back; and again he is in the 90th% on everything, but 98th% in math.) He told me last weekend, "Mom, this is Maribel's last week." "Are you going to miss her?" "Yes." "Perhaps you can make her a really nice card and draw a picture so that when she misses you, she can look at your note and remember you."

As soon as we arrived home and he'd eaten, he disappeared. I found him at the Firstborn's desk writing this note.

The corner says "flip."

This is such a far cry from two years ago. He threw extremely disruptive tantrums when his people left. After a year of therapy, healthier emotions came through like crying (though he seldom cries); and now, thoughtful discussion and actions taken to ensure an amicable parting. It's edifying to see his emotional growth ... and to see him seeking to process difficult emotions through trusted adults.

Healing

Sunday, February 27, 2022

DH took Mr. Serious & the Eldest to Phoenix and chilled out like Bob Marley this weekend. It was a piece of cake parenting just 4 children. The new dynamic began with the Engineer announcing with pride, "I'm the big kid at home," and acting like it.

We bought huge peanut butter blossoms and played at the park after school.

I received some gems from the kids like, "Mom, you always heal us with your treats!" by the Engineer; followed by Sweet Pea's, "Yeah, you always heal us with the going out!" Perfect personality sound bites! ❤

She also said this, which sounds amazing without all 4 of your front teeth: "I used to HATE asparagus; but now you put salt on it and bake it and I LOVE asparagus!"  ❤🤗 What will I do when they grow up?!

This one shouted, "Look! Pond!" as we turned the corner on Newport Coast Drive, revealing the beautiful Pacific. Everyone laughed. "It's a really, REALLY big pond," we laughed again. It is so delightful to have kids old enough to "get" jokes and laugh about things that are objectively funny. ❤🤗 Laughter makes everything better.

(Direct sunlight, which I seldom use in photography, caused this tremendous affect and blacked out most of the background in broad daylight, thanks to our skylight. Pretty cool effect.)

More Two-Year-Old Antics

He is having so many ambivalent feelings! He both desperately wants to feed his brother and emphatically wants to be done feeding his brother. It's hard to keep up with his big, opposing emotions. I can't help but notice that you seem a little at war with yourself, kiddo.

Also, I left the room for 3 seconds and returned to him picking off the fake cheese from this egg casserole. That's what he gets (Keto food) for being a scavenger. It's always a let-down, haha.
[We aren't actually doing Keto. No elimination diets ... just striving for balance. When we are successful, we feel better mentally and physically.]

After thinking about a wild story DH recounted from his youth, the Engineer said, "Mom, I know why God didn't let Dad die. He knew that he was going to be a really good dad." (I had him repeat that to DH. These little nuggets keep us going. 🙏💪)

The Fifth: 30 Months!

The doctor told me he will be 5'8" or 5'9" as an adult. She had no suspicion of autism; but we already knew that given his incredibly social persona. His attention is good. So, he may miss out on ADHD, too. (Both of these conditions have advantages along with the drawbacks. We look on them as neither "good" nor "bad." Rather, they are what they are. And it's good to know where your child is so that you can be the best parent to him.)

He drew himself and me holding hands three times. "And there are three letters in your name... I didn't do that on purpose."

He's super affectionate. I foresee a happy wife...

Meeting the parents.
February 19, 2010:

Wisconsin, covered a lot of ground that day:

 Being the parents.
February 19, 2022:

I surprised DH for a belated Valentine's date. This performance car was already taken for Valentine's weekend when I reserved it six weeks ago. It turns out that the inside holds heat pretty well. So, we were better off in 70* than we would have been in 85*. DH was truly surprised:

You can see the Fifth escaping to join us above, and then wiping out below. Poor thing!

It's true that you get a lot of greetings when you drive a flashy car, especially a convertible. My grandma used to tell stories of her baby blue convertible, which she called her "happy car" for that reason. She would smile as she recalled story after story. (I still would never spend $100K on a vehicle; but renting one to support our marriage is completely reasonable.)

It accelerates from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds with 490 horsepower and a wicked-sharp turning radius. DH really enjoyed driving it.

We cruised mostly on Pacific Coast Highway. I'm so grateful for my forever friend.

My Little Valentine

All were in bed when there was a knock at our door. The child who normally shouts everything stood there with a folded, taped picture and whispered, "I made something for Mom." DH let him inside. He jumped on the bed while I opened my picture. "Tell me about it," I said. "It's a big heart . . . and I added the other hearts because it didn't look good with just the red heart." He's such a simple, sweet kid!

Valentine's Day!

This is such a big deal for school kids. It was amusing to watch last-minute shoppers like me buying candy, young men grabbing the last few bouquets, and pop-up street vendors selling flowers.

The sweetest thing that happened, however, was our kids crowded around Sol with extreme delight at his graduation to the "bounce-bounce." Siblings are the best; and it's a joy to watch these six enjoy each other!

The Engineer

Thursday, February 10, 2022

He was "Student of the Week" recently and received "what's special about me" letters from his teacher and all of his classmates. The classmates asked questions of him at the end of the letters. Each letter was beautiful; but some were truly outstanding.

Two boys called him their "best friend," several wrote he was funny (E.g., "rily rily funny"), and one girl asked, "Why don't you like girls?" (A crush changed her mind about him 4 years ago, an unforgivable offense... But he has a couple of admirers again; and is getting over it.) I caught him reading his letters on his bed one morning. He had stopped at one of the letters that said, "You are my best friend." I asked him about it. He said that that friend "never told me I was his best friend before . . . but he acts like he's my best friend." "What does he do that is like a best friend?" I inquired. "He plays kickball with me," he said.

His teacher is exceptional at ensuring all the students feel important. He met her the day before the first day of school. She used a low voice, made eye contact, and asked him questions and listened to his answers and asked follow-up questions. I knew immediately that it was going to be a good year. Some teachers just "get" him. He has one this year. She is worth her weight in gold.
