Sweet Pea: Fifteen Months!
Thursday, September 15, 2016
It's taken some time for me to allow her to use a spoon. The nurse told me she needed to learn to eat on her own now. So we passed her a spoon and a cup of yogurt for lunch. (She does NOT like milk. So it's all cheese and yogurt for her calcium supply.) She reached for the spoon with her left hand and used it to serve herself. So we'll see if that continues.
We are working on listening. The only two "time-out" places that work for her are the bathtub and this box. I have to put her in the bathtub so she doesn't kill herself while I dry my hair next to her. (She is much better than the boys about sitting still, but still often runs away from me.) Here she was destroying my office filing pile (partly why I've been blogging so much less). According to her CNP, she demonstrates "typical toddler behavior." Hurray! ;)
Our little fighter:
She is becoming a great communicator and enjoys adding words to her vocabulary every day. We still think that she's a very smart girl.
Height: 30", 29th%; Weight: 18.81 lbs., 16th%; Head: 19", 97th%. The 15 month checkup is recently covered by most insurance plans. So, we don't have stats for the Firstborn or the Engineer at this age; but it's still fun to look back and remember.
On Being Five
Tuesday, September 6, 2016
Being five-years-old is all the rage in our home right now. One gets to go to preschool at five. One gets to meet new friends at five. One receives cake and ice cream and presents at five. What's not to love?! While walking down the steps to pick up the five-year-old from preschool, a mom asked the Engineer how old he was. He quietly whispered "five." He really wants to be five too. (We are trying to convince him that three is just as amazing.)
September is our month of well checkups and dental appointments. Thanks to a good network of babysitters, I've been able to take the kids one-on-one for most of these. I love giving them undivided attention like we gave this one for his first 21 months of life! It's good for everyone: the child, me, DH, and the siblings.
He really likes the outdoors. We are so grateful for a home with a safe street and fenced-in back yard. It gets a lot of use!
A large part of his identity is wrapped up in being the big brother.
He loves this role. He would be a completely different person without his siblings. They have been so good for him.

His interests include making notes and drawing pictures. This is a picture of three things he thinks about all the time:
1. Being a big boy (hence, he's on the top bunk, I'm on the bottom)2. Food (pie in the oven)
3. Monsters (nearly underneath the bed, where they always hide)
He got to draw pictures for his well checkup too. Of course, the nurse gushed over his abilities, which made him feel amazing. He is a pretty good artist. And "words of affirmation" is definitely one of his love-languages, possibly his primary language. His stats are consistent with his previous well checks. (44.75", 84th%; 45.6 lbs., 80th%)
A hobby both boys picked up recently is photography. I have about 500 photos on the camera, which I'm afraid to download or delete because I seldom have an hour to do it. Both boys try really hard to hold still and focus the camera. It's neat to see what they like to capture. This one often asks to take a picture with me. He can be very sweet and affectionate.
He wanted a football cake AND a cheesecake. (The effectiveness of giving choices has worn off since he discovered the power of "both!".) He's helpful, energized, smart, particular, strong-willed and outgoing. A good firstborn all around. We love you, Bud!
(The Engineer was crying because the Firstborn told him that he could blow out all the candles on the football cake. Then we told the Firstborn to just blow all of them out as it was getting late. We re-lit the football cake candles for the Engineer because kids just don't understand having a privilege revoked.)
Milestone Worth Celebrating!
DH's parents celebrate 50 years of marriage on the 10th. So, the children and grandchildren gathered last weekend to celebrate. Here is a photo medley, credit to everyone except me:
Of course, we celebrated Isaac's birthday too.
Andre got a present too:
The boys had a sleepover and roasted marshmallows. They had so much fun and want to go back and roast marshmallows again.
Pop Pop and Grandma were so helpful, taking the kids a couple of times so DH and I could rest. We wanted to make the trip longer, but DH had too many work deadlines. So, we did the 18 hour combined drive in about 48 hours. Here are the kids with their grandparents. They had so much fun!
