They're Growing

Wednesday, June 30, 2021

I'm always surprised at conversations that show they've never stopped learning.

"Mom, I feel sad." -Sweet Pea

"Why do you feel sad?"

"Because my brother was embarrassed."

"Well, empathy is a good thing. It's feeling how others feel. It's good to be empathy."

"Uh, mom. It's good to BE EMPATHY?!" -Firstborn

"No. It's good to HAVE empathy. It's good to BE empathetic."

"Yes. That was better."

"Thank you."

"I'm good at grammar. Well, English grammar."

(And in a hot minute everyone in my home will be smarter than I.)

Engineer's Thoughts

"Are you itchy again?" -Mr. Serious to Engineer

"Yes. Because I'm skinny. Skinny people are always itchy. Basically, fat people never get itchy."

----------------

"Mom, only girls can be sassy, right?" -Engineer

"Um, sure."

"See, [Sweet Pea]. You're sassy and I'm not."

---------------

"Do you think Supersonic is old enough to sleep on the top bunk?" (We put a stop on that.)

Waiting On Baby...

The fact that God has become man, indeed flesh, proves that the redemption and resurrection of the entire earthly world is not just a possibility but a reality.

Thirty-Nine

Sunday, June 27, 2021

I grabbed the "lightest" cake I could find. We still couldn't finish it.

Sweet Pea was up late in her room. I checked on her to ask what she was doing. "Making you a birthday card," she said. The next morning, I discovered a bunch of embezzled markers on her closet floor. ❤

Some very generous friends watched the kids so we could go out. I still can't believe we live in a place where there are palm trees in every photo and we can always be outside. God is so generous.

Thank you for the calls, texts, & gift cards!

Summer Vacation

Thirty minutes into Day 1 and we were doing great, haha! The Engineer made both of these and copied the Eldest's  "cool" pose.

Father's Day

Sunday, June 20, 2021

We love this one so much! The Engineer and I had planned to wake up at 5am and bring DH breakfast in bed. However, DH woke himself up at 3:30am and made breakfast for me. (Intense morning person.)

Thankfully, we were able to make him his requested alla vodka pizza with Roberta's pizza dough. I was proud of the sauce and did not scrimp at all, using this recipe with extra vodka, bacon, and fresh basil and parsley. We added brined and sautéed chicken breast.

DH wanted to do something LA-like. So we checked out Hollywood from Griffith Park. The drive up is breathtaking.

The kids made gratuitous gifts as well. Their teachers are amazing:

Mr. Serious brought back root beer and a bunch of treats, which he ate himself on the way home. We are working on generosity:

Pop Pop and the kids assembled and painted two bird feeders for DH:

Parties

Saturday, June 19, 2021

[First two photos from party host; 3rd DH's iPhone.]

It is so nice to have parties again! We are back to going out multiple times on the weekend, which gives us some leverage over the kids again. ("Have your room clean by 1pm if you want to go.")

Several parents told me that their kids LOVE Sweet Pea. Everyone knows who she is because she is incredibly outgoing and loves everyone. She bosses her teammates around like a pro; but exudes supreme confidence and affection while doing so. The Lord has something special planned for her. I know it!

The above photo warms my heart. And DH made me include this:

F5's Current Stage

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

This is what happens when I used the bathroom:

He's also using "sentences" like, "Look! I made!" while holding up a Lego Duplo creation. He also says all of his siblings names intelligibly. He can say, "got hurt," "snack," and someone is "be[ing] mean." All of the important things, haha!

This stage passes so fast; but it's been a while since we've been here. Mr. Serious and F5 have the largest age gap among our children. I forgot how active 2-year-olds are!

Hooded Orioles

Saturday, June 12, 2021

Compensating the gloom we get in June, which hasn't been bad this year, are these decidedly cheerful hooded orioles. They've been active in our back yard for several weeks. They like palm trees and our banana trees for their nests; and they are less fearful of us than other bird varieties.

The females are less beautiful but better at hiding and nesting:

Celebrations

Friday, June 11, 2021

[If you recognize a photo here you'd like removed, please message me. Everyone in this post has my number. In an effort to keep accessibility but promote viewership among people I know or those who will be friends, this blog is not search-able. It is "public," meaning that anyone with the URL can view it. I avoid using names to promote privacy, while at the same time recognizing there are things my kids will remember only if I record them here -- good memories that they'll want to keep. This year has shown me the fragility of life, how precious each moment is, and why we cannot take moments for granted. My condition, placenta accreta, recently had a 7% maternal mortality rate attached to it -- 7% among antepartum diagnoses, higher for those diagnosed at childbirth. Though my doctors think my chances of coming through are more like 99% -- and I'm not truly anticipating death -- death is something that can come with conditions like mine. With that in mind, I'm sharing this really wonderful party we threw for our kids' 6th & 8th birthdays. It's the best time we've had in a long while!]

The Engineer asked for a party just like his favorite classmate's with a bounce house, grilled cheeseburgers, and just a couple of families at our home. He compromised by allowing invites to anyone who overlapped with his sister's classmates and their families.

I spent a lot of time thinking about how to keep the event sanitary, which was a concern of mine long before the pandemic. Keeping the food inside at bar-height and removing all the stools to prevent toddler fingers in the food were two things we did to promote good hygiene. I also put out hand sanitizer bottles with encouraging signs to promote washing one's hands before eating.

Of course, I knew my former seminarian husband would recall immediately that section in Mark where the Pharisees ask Jesus why he did not perform the ceremonial handwashing before eating. However, we have every reason to believe that Jesus normally followed the Hebrew practices of the time, which would have included washing His hands before eating. There is no context given for that Biblical event. (So thanks for rolling with it, DH! ;)

We put everything else outside: tables, chairs, bounce house, etc. (And I ate before everyone came b/c I seem to catch every norovirus, cold virus, etc. that goes around.) And after all that, we prayed that everyone stay healthy and that the event serve as an encouragement and joy for all who come. God is good! +

When we returned to school on Monday, the Firstborn commented that we were parked next to 3 people who were at our party. He was really touched and happy that we were making good friends, a process that can't be rushed. Two years in, and he's seeing progress.

Some people came who surprised me based on assumptions I made that I wasn't cool enough for them; but the phrase played over in my head, "Invite them and they will come." I think there's some truth to that. Not many people want to host; but many are willing to attend.

"Why did you cover your ears?" -DH

"Because it was loud." -Engineer

The Engineer did a great job overall and did not require a break.

This photo makes me happy. We have a good community here:

Pop Pop bought everyone bubbles, which were a big hit.

The mob mentality is strong in our home:

Our pastor joined us. The bounce house folks told me that the house could hold adults -- and that I could go into there with my kids. Not that I wanted to induce labor! But their point was that it was a super high-quality bounce house made in the U.S.A. I'm not sure if I should be proud or offended, haha!

These two decided to go all "Rat Pack" on us until their shirts required changes. I'm not sure how the toothpicks blended, but I rolled with it.

Such sweet friends we are making:
