Perfect Timing Produces No Crying?
Wednesday, November 16, 2011
We're trying out the principles of "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" this week. I really like how Dr. Weissbluth makes a distinction between "the importance of sleeping well when we are in a biological sleep mode and the importance of security of attachment when we are in a biological awake mode." His theory is that if you find your child's sleepy signs and put him to bed before he is "overtired," he will sleep better and be happier and so will the whole family.
So far today Isaac went down perfectly for his morning nap and woke up kicking and cooing. The afternoon was more of a challenge as we had two meetings. Tonight he fell asleep with relatively little fussing, and quickly seemed to be in a pretty deep sleep mode. (Still have to read about the intricacies of these stages.)
Now I'm going through our mail and enjoying these beautiful flowers that Rich sent as a surprise.

Weekend Accomplishments
Monday, November 14, 2011
On Saturday morning, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel! Isaac slept through the entire night without waking up. We put him down at 6pm. He didn't wake up until 6am. Hopefully this becomes a habit before too long!
| Obsessed with crib mobile ... what are those things?? |
| In his "wrestle grizzlies in Alaska" hat for those super cold days ... or a trip to the mountains! |
On Sunday, Rich put him on a blanket for tummy time. He walked away for a minute. When he came back, Isaac was on his back. Looks like someone learned how to roll!

Check Up
Thursday, November 10, 2011
My two month check up was yesterday. We discovered that I am now in the 78th percentile for weight at 12 lbs., 7 oz. That's up from the 27th percentile at birth! We also discovered that I'm in the 98th percentile for both height and head circumference. Mommy was not surprised at all about the latter. I am 24.25 inches and have a 16 inch head.
How do I look? I have completely filled out some of my 3-6 month onesies as you can see here. I also just had my shots (hence the band aids on my legs). They weren't fun but mommy fed me and held me for a long time after them.

I am doing really well on my tummy and can hold my head up for a good thirty seconds at a time. I'm really enjoying this because of all the new things I can see. I also feel more secure than on my back.
I am almost rolling. The doctor says that this should happen at any time now and mommy needs to be extra careful to watch me when I'm on an elevated surface.
Here is a video that mommy sent daddy a few mornings ago. It shows how interactive I am becoming. I like to try to talk when people are talking to me. I also get really excited and move my arms and legs then. If you listen carefully, you can hear me coo. I do this a lot but don't like to perform for mom's little blue box. I really like the morning. That's my favorite time of day!
Though I do many things when I'm awake, I still try to be cute when I'm sleeping. The doctor said that mom doesn't have to get me right away when I cry at night because I'm getting enough food during the day. I went as long as I could last night (ten hours) and then I cried until mom got me. It was 4:00 am, the longest I've gone without eating at night. Mom was really happy!
It's time for another nap. See you soon!
My First Halloween
Friday, November 4, 2011
Guess what I was for my first Halloween?
The outfit was a little big.
I guess they don't make too many things in my size.
I guess they don't make too many things in my size.
It wasn't so bad, though. Lots of people came up to me and smiled and said I was cute. I have a funny feeling that mom's going to make me wear the same thing next year.
SAHM Life
Thursday, November 3, 2011
I was surprised to discover that there is an acronym for my job, although some women call the profession "WAHM." This morning, I woke up to Isaac crying at 7:10. He had been up previously at 3:00 am and 5:00 am. I was hoping to get a break. For a second I thought this is where you have to give up everything. Then, I remembered that Rich didn't sleep well either and was out the door around 6:00 am. So I dragged myself out of bed and fed the little one. He was very happy to see me. He cooed and cuddled and was otherwise completely adorable. I was glad that I got up.
We had to race to shower, change, and get to the doctor's by 8:50 am. I scheduled a "routine" physical, although this was my first one. Thankfully, the gynecological part was omitted since that exam was done during the pregnancy. We made it in time. Isaac slept through it. I was happy to discover that I'm slowly but surely losing the last 10 pregnancy pounds. The doctor walked in and gave me a run-down on what I should be doing. The only change we had to make was switching the calcium/vitamin D supplements. She recommended I get the tetanus and flu shots. I did. But I told the nurse that I was only doing it because I loved my family. He gave me two shots and drew two pints of blood. Afterward, I treated myself to a Starbucks. Needles terrify me. Who knew that the urine sample would become the easiest part of the doctor's visit?
After dropping off something that Rich needed, we went to Trader Joe's and bought some special treats for his birthday. Read: sausage, raspberries, and tapioca. We'll combine those with what we already have at home for a tasty birthday breakfast.
Next stop: Mr. Isaac's bath. I'm so glad we have the baby bath tub. (We got this for free from another mom.) It's really sturdy, so Isaac doesn't slip and I don't have to spend much energy trying to hold him up, which allows me to focus on cleaning him more thoroughly. I had forgotten how slippery kids are when they're wet! Because he's more securely situated, he is also calmer. In fact he seems to enjoy bath time. This is one item I would definitely pay for!
When we were finished, it was after noon. Time to feed him again. (Where does the time go?) Afterward, we chatted and made different sounds. He is learning more every day. He was particularly fussy today, so I got down on the floor with him during tummy time to help him push himself up. When he decided he was tired, I wrapped him up and put him on his back for a nap. He slept in fits and starts. Poor little thing! I nursed him more times than usual. When he napped, I checked on a few bills, washed the dishes, made two reservations, and read another chapter of "Heading Home with Your Newborn." (Why is it taking so long to finish?)
Then, I went through my e-mail and responded to everything. This took about a half hour. The baby started to stir. I woke him up to feed him, change him, and put something presentable on myself. It was 6:50 pm. So we headed out to pick up Rich and have dinner with his friend and new wife. It's amazing how much time parenting takes! I didn't spend time on Facebook, take a nap, watch TV, or eat bon bons. Nursing, changing, holding, playing and housework are a real job! Those are just my thoughts for today. :)

That Handy Husband
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
After I spent a few frustrating hours on the crib assembly on Friday, the husband took over. "I think you have the wrong-sized screws here" (pointing to the the sides/ends. "Let me just take this apart and check all of the parts and sizes." I insisted that that would be wasting all the time it took to get to that point and he'd have to do it all over again. But lo, he switched the screws and had it together within an hour. And here is the final product:
