Thanksgiving Festivities

Friday, November 29, 2024

We had a great time visiting with DH’s maternal first cousin. This is his mother’s first cousin through her father.

We heard family stories we’d never heard and learned about generational values which were inspiring.

He brought us to the San Diego Yacht Club. We were anticipating a complete disaster; but it went much better than anticipated! We were the only family with 6 children in that place; but it turns out our cousin’s wife and both daughters have backgrounds in education and were excellent with the kids. Baby Sol threw a complete meltdown when he had to say goodbye to “grandma.”

We brought a huge peace offering aka a care package as a token of gratitude. It’s so nice to be with family on the holidays! The dinner was second-to-none gourmet buffet; and he wouldn’t let us pay despite our taking up half the table. 😅

Our cousin is a Navy veteran, who took us on base and showed us around Loma Point, Dennis Conner’s home, and the beautiful, quiet neighborhood around Cabrillo. We learned about America’s Cup, which is such an institution there that locals can’t believe tourists don’t know as much as they do. ❤️ The Engineer told me later that he was disappointed we didn’t go sailing. We he heard “yacht club,” he thought sailing was part of our Thanksgiving dinner.

We made everyone use the restroom before storming our hosts’ two-bedroom condo. The only place open was Dunkin Donuts, which was perfect.

Earlier in the week, Sweet Pea played with the neighbor girls. She had a great time and wants to do it again.

The Bigs run the house, which means this poor little man is on the Bigs’ schedule, staying up until 11:00 p.m. and waking up at 8:00 a.m.

This one asked to learn how to put up her hair in a towel like mom.

More San Diego:

This guy is my partner in adventure, always ready to go out and try something new. He is a supreme extrovert, a boy after my own heart. The bib brothers told me this week that he might be “the smartest person in our family.” When asked how they can tell, they said he’s extra good at being tricky.

His class had a mock Macy’s Day Parade around their school. Everyone brought/made a balloon.

Thanksgiving at Sol’s school. I ran out for an hour lunch break.

Brainstorming re: how to survive he holidays without losing all motivation:

Ladies from school:

We had a table filled with women capable of mature friendship; and it warmed my heart.

School Gala 2024

Sunday, November 17, 2024

This night was an enjoyable way to make and foster connections. It has taken us forever to feel like we belong here—to the extent that anyone really belongs anywhere here. It’s edifying to see fruit from our efforts.

Forty-Eight

Tuesday, November 5, 2024

We love this man! He asked for things he needs, not wants, for his birthday. So we obliged. Replacement ASICS Gel Kayano 31s. We don’t mess with cheap running shoes anymore! And coffee mugs because we have to make the morning delightful so we are charitably-disposed by the time the kids wake up. It’s the little things.

I could not choose one. They were all perfect!:

The Engineer asked me this week why all the kids’ good qualities come from Dad’s side of the family, ironically the day after I was berated by a cheap client’s daughter for preparing exactly what the mother asked for at a discounted rate (having dropped everything including trick-or-treating with my kids because the client had a stroke and needed to sign her documents) while taking Sweet Pea back from the dentist following a late night (1am) volunteer job for school from which DH tells me I earned .5 of the actual 7 hours spent volunteering, which followed a late night of homework. I just asked the Engineer if he was joking and told him that that was totally demoralizing.
However, the reality is that he sees more of his dad lately. Dad coaches his soccer team. Dad picks him up from school and does homework with him. Much of my very hard work is hidden from him; but that will change soon. Regardless, the point is that the kids LOVE this guy; and he’s a wonderful father! What a legacy!

Each of the kids had a turn opening presents. The Engineer made a chocolate pie with lots of help from Mom.

He asked for an HB mug; and this was the manliest one I could find:

^Sol trying so hard not to miss a thing.

My favorite because it’s both judge-y and punny.

And this one because he seldom gives me a teethy smile:

Fifteen birthdays for this guy!

47, 46, 4544434241403938373635, and 34. Happy birthday, Love! It’s hard to believe how long we’ve been together already! Here are our previous celebrations: 47464544434241403938373635, and 34. Happy birthday, Love!
