Second Week at Home

Friday, October 31, 2025

We checked off some big tasks weighing on us and spent lots of time with the kids. Highlights:

Submitted Medi-Cal application, which makes every other application look like child’s play!

Submitted one high school application and gathered a majority of the paperwork for three others. Coached the Firstborn in self-promotion. It does NOT come naturally to him, which is both good and bad. He prepared an essay and a video for his first application.

Prepared all the tuition assistance applications with a laptop with a non-working “a” and “!” key. I had to call customer service just once and resolved the issue on the same call! Explained the difference between public and private schools, property taxes, and tuition to the inquisitive Mr. Serious.

Checked out a local food coop wherein a conversation re: transubstantiation was hurled upon me. You can’t make this stuff up!

Made applesauce, apple pie, cookies, banana bread, banana oatmeal muffins, and several dinners.

Washed all the bedding, kids’ laundry, and cleaned all the children’s rooms, and LO! All the bad smells are gone!

Checked homework and grades and held children’s feet to the fire. Removed food from bedrooms dozens of times. Mitigated a hidden device fest a couple of times. I’m on to you, kids! Always watching. 👀

Took a child to a UCI appointment, had an impromptu teacher meeting, and watched some friends’ girls after school four afternoons.

I can’t believe we thought we could work AND do all these things?!

One Week at Home

Saturday, October 25, 2025

This has been the best week of my life! Our roles have returned to normal. We are doing the things we’re good at and working through the things we’re not-so-good-at that come with our jobs. Here are some highlights.:

Engineer was praised by his Latin teacher for participating and doing well in class overall.

Voicemail from fellow mom just to let me know of a situation when the Firstborn demonstrated “spiritual maturity” and she was so proud of him.

The joy on Sol and the Fifth’s faces when they see me pick them up from school. “Mom, you’re here early!”

Making cookies and banana bread for their return from school.

Deep cleaned the 3 largest common spaces; and now everyone wants to hang out in them.

Mr. Serious shared his chair with the lounge space because it matches. He has been quite calm all week.

Made certain children walk to school; and everyone clean up after himself.

Sweet Pea won a watermelon eating contest.

I found some money in the form of $125 credit for school supplies while reducing my 6” paper pile to a 2” paper pile.

DH came home early every day and went in to the office early.

We ate dinner together 5 nights.

I was down 3 lbs. at my monthly WW weigh-in, no doubt due to reduced stress and calories burned from all the elbow grease.

I went to daily Mass 4 of 6 days.

Listened to many inspiring podcasts and my Book Club’s October Book.

Thanks be to God!

Day Two Back at Home

Wednesday, October 22, 2025

Someone asked me, “What did you do with your down time today?” after school on Monday. It offended me less than it used to. I’ve been working through why society (including me) makes naive assumptions about “free time.” There is literally a 6” pile of insurance claims from the last 2 years which I need to log and reconcile because at least one—if not all—of our providers have neither the competence nor the drive to keep track of our payments. Then there is the Medi-Cal application which I’ve been putting off even though our autistic one will qualify; and the acceptance will bring additional scholarships which will help us. There was no time for that while I was working. Even more important is my dental implant, which has failed. I need to get as much of that covered as possible, which has already included 3 hours of my time; and I do not have a resolution.

These priorities are in addition to preparing meals for 8 people, doing laundry, keeping our home (really a 3-month project of de-griming), and high school applications (early deadlines are 11/1). It’s a labor of love; and it’s a full time job.

Yesterday, the Firstborn had his first blood draw. They couldn’t get his vein with the first poke. He was brave; and I was proud of him. So I bought him these.:

There is at least one medical appointment per week, but frequently more than one. Four kids are in sports. And besides that, they simply have emotional needs which need to be attended to by their mother. It is such a joy to bake something for them for when they return from school and to see them calm down and let go of their stress once they are home.

Part of my personality wants to make everyone understand everything; but that is a perpetual exercise in frustration. I’m working on letting go. The largest challenge to doing a good job here (keep in mind, pregnancy is no longer a potential) is the outside noise. I’ve deactivated my social media accounts for now so there are fewer distractions to keeping a disciplined schedule. Keep praying for me. So far I am relieved and have peace. We are no longer attempting the impossible; and we are putting our primary energy into that which is most important.

Her current team is made up of girls mostly 1-2 years older than she; and she’s still a competent player.

DH has reffed many games, fulfilling much of the required points for playoff qualifying. Here he told the fans to show respect for the youth who was assisting with the reffing. You have to tell adults these things. 🤦🏼‍♀️

You know it’s going to be interesting when the coach shows up barefoot.

Firstborn and Football.

I love sports for our kids. Nothing motivates them or keeps them happy like competitive physical activity. I mentioned to the Eldest that he seemed much happier playing football than Minecraft. He agreed, “I am.”

Mr. Serious and Soccer.

He is learning to believe in himself, sometimes the largest obstacle for each of us. He is strong and capable. We love him very much!

The most amusing moment of the season has been the Engineer lecturing Mr. Serious about putting forth effort. “You have the potential. You just have to try.” Oh, the irony!

Soccer at this level is low-key. No one is taking it too seriously. No parent is projecting his insecurities on his kid. The parents bring their kids because they need activities. It’s sweet.

I can’t get enough of this kid!

It is just so enjoyable to watch him play. This is his 4th season; and he’s a competent player.
