“Let’s get this party started!” I hear shouted in the back yard while studying for yet another certification I was sold as “necessary.” 😭

“Okay, Spider Man!”

“Okay, Iron Man!”

There is never a dull moment in our home; and there are no shrinking violets.

Colleagues

Saturday, September 28, 2024

These are just a few of us with a former colleague, who recently moved to Superior Court, and his family. We are lucky to have a friendly team with similar values and a passion for serving clients well.

Thurible

This was the Firstborn’s first experience. He likes the smell. Also, these are 7th and 8th grade boys; and you can tell the varying stages of growth spurts. It will be interesting to see where they are when fully grown.

“Like” and “Like Like”

Tuesday, September 24, 2024

“Mom, you know how I told my brothers who I like the other day?”

“No. I didn’t know that. Would you like to tell your Mom who you like?” I respond in the most nonchalant tone I can find.

“LuckyBoy. And I used to like him in TK but then I didn’t because I liked LuckyBoy2, you know, with the gelled, slicked back hair. And then I *started* to like MyBestFriendsCrush but then I prayed to Jesus so I wouldn’t like him. And then I didn’t like him. And now I like LuckBoy again. It changes all the time. I told him because I didn’t want him to tell everyone; and then it would just be weird.”

“Wow, Sweet Pea. He’s a nice boy. What did he say when you told him that you liked him?”

“He said he liked me too, but he doesn’t want me to obsess about him.”

“Did he say that?”

“No. I just know. So I ‘like’ him; I don’t ‘like like’ him if you know what I mean…’like’ like ‘love.’ I don’t mean that kinda ‘like.’”

A few days later she told me that LuckyBoy told her first that he liked her. “How did that conversation come about?” I asked in my pretend nonchalant voice again.

“I asked him, ‘Who do you like?’ And he said, ‘Kinda YOU.’”

As a mother, I am edified when 9-year-old boys see what I do in my daughter. Thankfully, they are still young and innocent; and their affection is genuine. It makes sense to me that she likes this boy. He’s fun and cute and from a good family and nice. His mother is amazing. But I cannot get over how she just puts it out there. Like her father. The boys and I are much more guarded about that type of thing. Life will never be dull with all these personalities!

Week Shenanigans

Monday, September 9, 2024

Everyone in our home is happy after the Lions win.

DH took the three littles to the beach; and there was zero fighting. The bottom three are great about that.

He is uninhibited and pretty adept, absolutely determined to be a big boy!

Sweet Pea had a birthday party for one of her best friends. They made letter jean jackets and had mani/pedis.

Snips and snails and lizard tails:

We released him into the wild; and I’m sure he’s too scared to ever enter our home again.

Last gymnastics class (switching to surf and soccer- better schedule). She’s eating mango after class looking at pictures of her as a baby eating mango.

Teenager Time

How are we already here?!

There may be many sibling fights, but one thing’s certain: the younger siblings look up to him, literally and figuratively. He’s a good Firstborn and enjoys the role.

The Engineer and Mr. Serious stayed up until 1am decorating for him.

He asked for Axis & Allies 1942 Second Edition after considering every possible option within the price parameters we gave him.
(I just realized that this was the third time we’ve purchased Axis & Allies for him for his birthday; and all I can say is that you’d be horrified by how many things get destroyed in our home. #LivinTheDream!)

We get compliments about him all the time. He’s a fast reader, curious, and bright. He’s navigating puberty with a fair amount of grace so far. There have been so many changes to process for him. He’s almost the tallest kid in school; and people keep commenting on it. His doctor said he’ll be 6’3” but it was 6’1” for the longest time. He may just be an early bloomer. This is a critical time for quality friends and adults; and I’m so glad we have the community we do. This trimester’s activities are football and mock trial.

Stats:

Height 5’6.06”, 93rd%
Weight 152 lbs., 97th%
BMI 24.49

Check out his previous years:

Paralegal Certificate

Monday, September 2, 2024

Seventeen months, 11 courses, 30 credit hours, countless hours of research, reading opinions and texts, writing papers, one scholarship, a full-time legal job, and a very patient husband and children and here we are … finally finished with the UCI Paralegal certificate program!

DH threw me a party with 89 guests, all of whom were delightful, down-to-earth people. I’m typing this for when I forget that I have any friends, haha. Life is hard! Phew. Anyway, I made 3 types of cookies and 7 layer bars and navel orange salad and everything was eaten except the 7 layer bars. DH smoked pork shoulder and roasted it overnight; and that is all gone. We made beer brats, half of which are gone. We are so happy to be in a position to host people again!

(If you’re wondering why you weren’t invited to celebrate, and you know me in real life, you WERE invited; and I’m sorry that word didn’t get to you. We love all of our people!!!)
